I’m so excited to share with you an unexpected gift that my grandmother bought for me. (We call my grandmother Nanay, which is Filipino for Mother). My Mum and Nanay visited late Sunday afternoon carrying a giant box – a new sewing machine! Ahhh!
It was an el-cheapo on sale from Spotlight, but still, I absolutely love it! 😀
It was only just days before, a close friend and I made a detour on a shopping trip to check out some sewing machines. Completely spontaneous decision. She had her eye on getting one for herself and coincidentally so did I. And as strange fate would have it, we looked at the same one Nanay brought for me. What are the chances?
I was so beside myself when I saw what they’d brought over. You see, Nanay is the resident seamstress in the family. She’s been whipping up clothes and curtains and you-name-it’s for years. My Mum followed in her skilled footsteps and learnt a trick or two (but kinda quit when we were young, when my brother cut her home-made dress to pieces with scissors…), so it was kinda my turn to learn when I got old enough.
For one of my birthdays my Mum bought me my very own sewing machine. It was special because it was kinda our ‘thing’. Then years later I’d married, moved away, let a friend borrow the machine and sadly never got it back. I was always so sad about loosing that machine, and secretly I think my Mum was a little sad too.
It had been on my mind for years, and I swear I was actually thinking of asking my Mum to get me another one for my birthday this year. And I usually never ask for anything! Like I said, what are the chances??
So, now that I have this baby, ill be sewing up a storm. For the record, I can’t sew for shit. But my heart is in the right place 😉
You can expect to see a few attempted sewing projects when I re-learn the ropes. Do you like to sew?
Thank you so much Nanay! I’m going to now spend every minute dodging important tasks to sew random things like squares and circle shapes… xx
