ModelCo SPF50+ Daily Face Sunscreen and Lip Balm & Bronze Dry Touch Sunscreen Review

Every now and then a product comes along which makes me throw my hands in the air and say, THANK-YOU! Thank you for creating such a genius product, and in this case, for cleverly combining SPF 50+ broad spectrum UVA & UVB sun protection with a heavenly bronzing product. Without really knowing it, I feel like I’ve been wanting these exact products for a while now.

If there is one beauty aspect I am a little crazy about it’s sun protection. I’m all for it in its most effective form, purely for the fact that sun damage and skin cancer is serious business. So when I saw ModelCo’s Daily Face Mattifying Sunscreen & Lip Balm, and Bronze Dry Touch Sunscreen, I did something to the effect of spitting my coffee everywhere in excitement. I rushed out and purchased these items as quickly as humanly possible.

The realisation that I can protect my skin from sun damage, AND have temporarily tanned limbs without the effort of self tanners (hello, Mum with lots of kids here), left me happier than Larry. And I hear he was pretty darn happy. So let’s get down to the business of reviewing these two, because if you’re like me sunscreen makes you feel all kinds of grown up and responsible. Any extra benefits are just bonus points.

So what exactly are they?

Well, the Daily Face Mattifying Sunscreen & Lip Balm SPF 50+ Broad spectrum UVA + UVB – besides being a complete tongue-twister – is a clever little tube with both a lightweight matte formula, oil-free, lightly tinted sunscreen and a lip balm with mirror hidden in the lid. True to ModelCo form, they have used their clever more-than-one-product design to create an easy to use duo.

And as for the Bronze Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF 50+ Broad spectrum UVA + UVB, it is a sunscreen minus the usual pasty white formula. Yes, it is a natural bronze temporary colour with an amazing scent. All simply washed off at the end of the way. Is it too soon to tell you I am in love with these products?

Daily Face Mattifying Sunscreen & Lip Balm SPF 50+ Broad spectrum UVA + UVB
Price: $24.95 AUD
Shelf life: 12 months
SPF Re-application Required: 1-2 hours

Face 40ml / 1.35 fl.oz
Noticeably lightweight, this sunscreen is lightly tinted but applies very sheer. Whether you have light-dark skin tone, I believe just about anyone could wear it. It is hydrating enough to go without a moisturiser beforehand, and alternatively is not too heavy if you chose to apply both. It is non-greasy, and fast drying for quick application. The smell has a slightly chemical scent to it, similar to other sunscreens I have tried, but it is not noticeable enough to be irritating.

Lips 1.5gr
The balm applies clear, and is nicely hydrating on the lips. There is a very light, almost unnoticeable sweet/balm scent.

Bronze Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF 50+ Broad spectrum UVA + UVB
Price: $29.95 AUD
Size: 150ml
Shelf life: 12 months (website says 3 year shelf life)
Water Resistant: 4 hours
SPF Re-application Required: 1-2 hours

The colour of the body bronzer is quite dark out of the tube, but don’t be afraid. It does blend out nicely with a sheer natural looking tone. It is nothing like a facial foundation and only gives you a wash of colour just as any body tanner would. A small amount does go a long way, and the colour is buildable for a deeper look. I recommend doing one section at a time, starting with a small application. I did make the mistake of applying too much in one trial, and blending was quite tedious and streaky until the product dried and blended properly.

The scent is very pleasant and coconut-like, without being too overpowering. No awful tanning smell at all. The dry time is 5-10 minutes. Once dried the colour is fairly budge proof, but just to be safe I wouldn’t apply it and go and hug your bestie in her pristine wedding dress (If you know what I mean :)).

Final Thoughts

I’m going to flog that old (sunscreen) horse and say I love both these products for so many reasons, one being top notch sun protection. I have to admit, I’ve been a ModelCo fan for many years. They have continually sparked my interest by creating products that just make sense. Heated eyelash curlers, spray on tans, and way back before sculpting your eyebrows was cool, ModelCo had a brow sculpting kit that I loved. Admittedly it’s been a few years since I’ve made a purchase, but I’m more than happy to call myself a supporter.

Back to this duo though, I can easily say they’ve both reserve a coveted spot on my beauty must haves list. And I don’t consider just any old product a holy grail item. I’m incredibly awkward with at-home tanning, and am admittedly worse at the upkeep. I love the way that this facial sunscreen doesn’t interfere with my makeup or skin care, and that the body bronzer requires no upkeep or commitment (besides re-application for full sun protection of course!). It all comes down to maximum effectiveness with little effort. I can have my sunscreen cake and eat it too – all while sashaying around in my summer skin and smelling like I’ve just rolled off the beach (from Bora Bora). Modelco bronzer, I do love you!

Nuff said 🙂

What kind of review would this be if I didn’t cover everything? Not a very good one, that’s what! And like every product, these might not be for everyone. The important thing to remember is that body bronzer does contain colour, so think of it like other tanners. A little extra care around light clothes is a good idea.

As with all sunscreens reapplication is extremely important, so if you don’t like the idea of layering a bronze colour every hour or so to top up your SPF this might not be for you. While the colour should remain until you wash it off, the sun protection won’t last all day. No sunscreen product does that.

I would also avoid the body bronzer for facial application. I tried it and found it did not apply as well. Like socks are to feet, leave this baby for your body. There are plenty of specially formulated face tanners if this is what you’re after.

Hope you enjoyed my review! 😀
